The office of coppersmith in Gaudí's family

Josep Salvany, married with Dionisia, was a coppersmith in Vilafranca del Penedès. His son Simeó Salvany (great-great-grand-father of Anton Gaudí) was also a coppersmith and he emigrated to Riudoms. He established his workshop of boiler making in the house placed nowadays in the Raval de Sant Francesc, n. 14, composed of ground floor, mezzanine and two floors. The building was inherited by his daughter Francesca Salvany i Serra, married in 1767 with Francesc Gaudí i Figueres, from profession farmer (great-grandfathers of Anton Gaudí). Their son first-born male, Francesc Gaudí i Salvany (paternal grandfather of Anton Gaudí) recaptured the coppersmith's office and inherited the house, where he lived with his wife Rosa Serra and their seven children were born: Francesc (Riudoms 1813 - Barcelona 1906), father of Anton Gaudí, Maria (Riudoms 1815-?), Antoni (Riudoms 1817-Reus 1896), Rose (Riudoms 1820-Valls 1884), Josep (Riudoms 1822 - Tarragona 1864), Plàcid (Riudoms 1823 - Barcelona 1914) and Salvador (Riudoms 1828-Valls 1905). Francesc Gaudí i Salvany's death in 1828 stopped widow to Rose "la Calderera" with seven small children. She had wake up and at the end of 1833 she established herself in Reus, her city of origin. The house and Riudoms's small rustic estate stayed as patrimony of the "hereu", Francesc, under the administration of his mother widow, of whom they would take the popular nicknames of "Ca la Calderera" and "Mas de la Calderera". All her children males learned to read and to write and a handcrafted office. The seven brothers dispersed for the nearby populations. The "hereu", Francesc, was a coppersmith and remained in Reus. Possibly he learned the office in the workshop of who would end up by being his father-in-law, Anton Cornet i Sans, in the street of the Amargura, n. 23. Anton Cornet i Sans (Reus 1771-1856, mother grandfather of Anton Gaudí) was a coppersmith. He was married with Maria Bertran i Buxeda (mother grandmother of Anton Gaudí) and was a son of Carles Cornet i Llombart, married with Maria Sans i Fernandes (great-grandfathers of Anton Gaudí) and of profession beater of copper. In short, they were coppersmiths the following predecessors of Anton Gaudí: - The father - The paternal grandfather, that widow left to "La Calderera " - The mother grandfather - A paternal great-great-grand-father - The father of this paternal great-great-grand-father And a mother great-grandfather was a beater of copper.
