Anton Gaudí was born at half past nine of Wednesday the 25th June of 1852. In all the official documents, Gaudí made to be evident that he was natural of Reus. However, some witnesses affirm that Gaudí -in the last years of his life, since Reus stopped from constructing the new Sanctuary of the Virgin of Compassion- he had said that his birth had been produced to the Mas de la Calderera, of Riudoms. Also the people from Riudoms have always had evidence of this fact, keeping living the witness of the midwife of the village, Engràcia Llorens i Pellicé. In any case, on the following day he was baptized in Sant Pere of Reus by the vicar, father Josep Casas, his uncles Placid Gaudí, of Riudoms, and Raimunda Tarragó de Gaudí, of Barcelona, being godfathers. Were imposed him the names of Anton (name of the mother and of the maternal grandfather), Placid (name of the godfather) and Guillem (san William, hermit, is celebrated on 25 June). It was confirmed at the year and three months of life, on the 10th September of 1853. The sacrament was imparted him by the bishop of San Juan of Puerto Rico, Monsignor Gil Esteve i Tomàs, who then served in the Archdiocese of Tarragona. In the same ceremony was confirmed his cousin Anton Gaudí i Tarragó, two years more great that him. The boy Anton Gaudí grew up in an independent economically family although very modest, cult from antique and that took care of giving the sons the sacraments and a Christian education. He took seven years to his greater sister Rosa and one to his brother Francesc. In his immediate environment there was the grandmother Rosa la Calderera, the uncles and cousins and the friends and fellow students of Reus and of Riudoms. He followed the primary education in the school of payment of Francesc Berenguer of the street Monterols in Reus. But it was an ill boy, grieved of rheumatic fevers, which forced him to spending a lot of time without following the classes, in Riudoms, where sometimes they had to mate with it in an ass because he could not walk. These long stays in the field allowed him to pick up the Mediterranean light and they developed his capacity of observation of the nature, of what he learned directly, more than through the academic books, towards those that a great critical spirit took. Thus, one time the teacher explained that the birds have the wings to fly and he interrupted him saying that the hens of home could not fly and that they used the wings only for running more quickly. On the other hand, Anton helped the father in the work. He learned of him the virtues of the work and the transformation of the surfaces in volume, which facilitated him the spatial imagination a lot. He always considered that his aptitude for the art was an inheritance of those of the father and of the two grandparents, the three coppersmiths. During his childhood, Gaudí lived between two worlds: the citizen of Reus -which included the study and the work- and the rural one of the Mas de la Calderera.
